Arms smuggling rises in Rajshahi ahead of national polls

The trade and supply of illegal arms has increased in Rajshahi through the borders ahead of the upcoming national election.
According to the sources, different arms traders are being involved and active in smuggling and dealing in firearms on demand.
Terrorists, militants, political men, snatchers, kidnappers and other criminals has been buying the firearms from the arms traders to create political violence mainly ahead of the 11th parliamentary election of the country.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-5) and police sources said these after arrest some of arms traders during drives in different areas across the district recently.
The members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) also remain alert for controlling the arms smuggling but the arms smuggling are not being stopped despite their adequate vigilance.
The illegal firearms are entering the district through different border points. The entry points are Khanpur, Khidirpur, Chor Mazardia and Alaipur.
Commander of RAB-5 lieutenant colonel Mahabub Alam said, they have been trying constantly to identify such of smugglers who sells arms to the underground parties and the group of terrorists.
Mohammod Sohiddullah, the police super of Rajshahi district said that they are working in the border areas with strict security and they have been also trying to stop arms smuggling through the borders.
The senior assistant commissioner Ifte Khayer Alam, spokesperson of Rajshahi metropolitan police in this regard also said that they have already arrested 29 firearms traders and notorious criminals recently. At that time, huge arms were recovered. The offenders were brought out under law. Police collects different information from the arrestees. Police team will also conduct special drives to control the smuggling, the deputy police commissioner also said.
