Armed men kidnap 20 rivals in Rangamati

Armed men have kidnapped at least 20 people including union parishad (UP) members from Bondukvanga union in Rangamati district on Thursday.
Locals said, unknown gunmen arrived at the Vanghamura hilly area at 12am and picked them up at gunpoint.
The victims were hailed from villages of Naniarchar upazila under Rangamati district.
The names of the abducted persons could not be known immediately.
Locals said, the abducted persons were the supporters of Tapon Joyti Chakma, the leader of newly formed UPDF (Democratic) Party.
Tapon Joyti Chakma, in a statement, held responsible the UPDF’s armed cadres for the incident.
He said, the UPDF move forward to commit the heinous crime to destroy his party.
Rejecting the allegation, Niron Chakma, a UPDF spokesperson, told The New Nation that he was not aware of the incident. “In my knowledge, no such incident took place. It is a motivated campaign launched by the UPDF (Democratic) Party,” he added.
Superintendent of Police in Rangamati Md Tariqul Hasan said he had learnt that the armed gangs picked up a number of people from Vanghamura at noon.
“We learnt that as many as 20 people were abducted, but police did not immediately confirm the number,” he added.
He also said the details of the incident are yet to be known. They are trying to gather information on the incident.
Officer-in-Charge of Naniarchar Police Station Abdul Latif said he was aware of the incident and investigating the matter.
