Armed Forces must uphold spirit of Lib War: PM

Terming it the nation’s pride, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday hoped the Bangladesh Armed Forces would move forward upholding the Liberation War spirit.
“We’re a victorious nation in our Great War of Liberation…Bangladesh Army was established during the Liberation War. I hope Bangladesh Armed Forces would move ahead by upholding the Liberation War spirit,” she said. The Prime Minister said this while congratulating new Chief of Army Staff Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul Huq after the rank badge-adorning function held at the Prime Minister’s official residence Ganobhaban in the afternoon.
In presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral M Farid Habib and Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Abu Esrar adorned the new Army Chief with the rank badge of General.
The Prime Minister, also in charge of the Ministry of Defence, said her government has been working with utmost sincerity to build the armed forces as modern, time-befitting and international standard professional forces.
“Our stride for further development of the armed forces will continue in the
future,” she said. Hasina said the Bangladesh Armed Forces has been playing a unique role in facing different natural disasters and providing human assistance alongside safeguarding the country’s independence and sovereignty.
The new Army chief said Bangladesh Army would continue to work by keeping intact the trust in the government and constitution as per the Prime Minister’s guidelines.
Prime Minister’s Security Affairs Adviser Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, PM’s Principal Secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad, PMO Secretary Suraiya Begum and PM’s Military Secretary Major General Mia Mohammad Zainul Abedin, PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim and Special Assistant Mahbubul Hoque Shakil and senior military officials were, among others, present. Earlier in the day, Chief of Army Staff General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan formally handed over the charge of the Army chief to Let Gen Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul Huq.
