Appointment of psychiatrists in schools underscored

Autism expert and advisory council member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Saima Wazed Hossain on Monday stressed psychiatrists intervention for the development of mental health of school children in the country.
“The role of psychiatrists is important for the development of the mental health of school children,” a Dhaka University press release quoted her as saying after she joined a function of the university’s Educational and Counseling Psychology department.
Saima, also the Chairperson of the National Advisory Committee on Autism and Neuro Development disabilities in Bangladesh and daughter of Prime minister Sheikh Hasina, suggested appointment of psychologists in schools.
She was speaking as the chief guest at the discussion titled, “Becoming a School Psychologist”.
The internationally reputed autism expert later made a courtesy call on Vice Chancellor Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique at his office on the campus.
During the meeting, they discussed about the development of study curriculum on psychology related subjects.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr Nasrin Ahmad was present during the meeting, the press release said.
