Khaleda Zia’s lawyers said that the verdict was politically motivated. But they would fight against the verdict legally and will file the appeal petition after receiving the certified copy of the verdict.
Advocate Zainul Abedin, one of the lawyers of the former Prime Minister, said, “There is no law to punish Khaleda Zia because she is innocent. But the court acted on the other’s advice. Now we shall move to the High Court to get justice there.”Khaleda Zia’s another lawyer Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain said, “It is a verdict of political revenge. This sentence has been given to separate Khaleda Zia from the people,”
He also said that they will appeal with the High Court against the verdict immediately after receiving the certified copy of the verdict.
Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokan shouted in the courtroom rejecting the verdict soon after the judge completed the reading of the judgement.
“False case, false verdict,” he said.
On Thursday BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was jailed for five years after she was found guilty in the Zia Orphanage Trust case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Her eldest son and BNP’s Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman and four others, former lawmaker Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal, businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed, Khaleda’s former Principal Secretary Kamal Uddin Siddiqui and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s nephew Momenur Rahman, have been given 10 years jail in the case and a fine of Tk 2.10 crore each in the case. Judge of the Special Court-5 in Dhaka, Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman, delivered the verdict.
