Thousands of workers from a member of ready-made garment (RMG) factories blocked streets in Mirpur on Sunday to protest price hike of daily essentials.
The agitated workers vandalized a factory in the area, demanding hiking their wages as the daily essential prices have raised in recent days.
The workers were damaging an Eastern Group’s factory on Sunday, at around 10:30am.
Hundreds of agitated workers gathered at Mirpur-10 Golchhatar and started blocking different streets around the area for five and a half hour since 8am.
The agitated workers left the streets at 1.30 am after police informed that the RMG factory owners sat in a meeting in Sromo Bhaban for addressing the problem.
 “Workers of different garment factories took to the streets at Mirpur-10 folchattor area after 8:00 am. Later, other workers of garment factories from adjacent areas, including Kazipara, Shewrapar and Agargaon, also joined them,” said Abu Raihan Mohammad Saleh, Joint Commissioner of Traffic (North). witnesses said that a number of garment factories were vandalised during the demonstrations.
Vehicular movement from Mirpur-1 to Agargaon remained halted for several hours, giving sufferings to the commuters especially the office employee and teacher and students. Several schools have postponed their scheduled examination for the huge traffic gridlock due to the RMG workers blocked in the streets. On Saturday, thousands of workers blocked roads to protest against the price hike of daily essentials.
They demonstrated at Mirpur-13 around 11am on Saturday. Thousands of workers from adjacent garment factories joined the protest in the area till 2:30pm. On Thursday, echoing the same demand, the RMG workers had staged another protest in the city.
