Staff Reporter :
In the face of widespread demand to show the text of mercy petitions submitted by the hanged convicts Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam expressed his helplessness to place it to the public without permission of the President.
Earlier, a serious confusion has arisen among the people mass across the country and journalists over whether the convicts applied for presidential clemency or not and what was the text of the petitions although neither the law minister nor the Attorney General disclosed anything about the text of the ‘mysterious’ petitions.
“We do not deserve the right to show the petitions to the public until we get permission from the President,” Mahbubey Alam told the journalists. “It dose not matter what are the content. Any petition made to the president under article 49 of the constitution by a convict sentenced to death to be seen as mercy petition,” the Attorney General said.
Law Minister Anisul Haque at a press briefing yesterday also refused to show the petition without President’s permission.
However, family members of both SQ Chowdhury and Mojaheed urged the government to show the petitions if it is with them.
