Protests including demonstrations and forming human chains against the rape incidents, sexual harassment and violence against women continued across the country for the eighth consecutive day on Monday demanding exemplary punishments for culprits and their patrons.
At Shahbagh, hundreds of protesters, mostly leaders and activists of leftist student wings took to the street and started performing a ‘cultural rally’ in the area from afternoon.
At that time, protesters demonstrated by staging various dramas, reciting poems and singing songs seeking justice for recent rape victims and demanding strict law regarding rape and speedy trial of rapists.
They also demanded dedicated court for rape trials and the resignation of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal for “failing” to prevent rapes across the country.
Besides, protesters announced to organise a film festival on Oct 13, a women’s rally on Oct 14, and a cycle rally on Oct 15 respectively.
Earlier, another demonstration was held in the same area under the banner of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council around 12pm protesting the arrest of four leaders of the council.
During the protest, Rashed Khan, Joint Convener of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council, demanded immediate release of four top leaders of the organization those were missing and arrested since yesterday noon.
Another Joint Convener of the Council Faruque Hasan said police already admitted that they arrested only two leaders who already placed for two days remand. But we still don’t know about other two missing leaders. So, government must reveal their place, Faruque added.
Several hundred leaders and activists of Bangladesh Awami Ulema League formed a human chain in from of the city’s National Press Club on Monday.
In the protest, they blamed that Indian nasty films are mostly responsible for the recent rape incidents across the country.
In Narsingdi, a human chain was formed in front of Narsingdi Press Club under the banner of district Joint Social Movement on Monday. People of different classes and professions took part in this protest programme.
Speakers at the human chain demanded exemplary punishment of the rapist and their patrons.
Similar protests were also reported from Barishal, Rangamati, Gaibandha, Bramanbaria and others districts.
Waves of anti-rape demonstrations have arisen across the country after a video footage of five men gang-raping a housewife, and stripping a woman naked and filming the video of the incident in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali, went viral on social media recently.
The incident occurred in Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila at Joykrishnapur village of Eklashpur union on September 2. Earlier, the housewife of Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila was molested by some local miscreants at Ward No. 9 of Eklashpur Union of the Upazila last month and a video of the barbaric incident went viral on the internet.
