Mobile courts will run in cities, all districts and some upazilas everyday to keep the markets almost formalin-free ahead of Ramzan.
Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has decided to conduct at least four mobile courts in Dhaka city, necessary number in other city corporations, one in every district and some other vital upazilas across the country.
District administrations, Metropolitans Police, Armed Police Battalion (APBn), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) also will join the drive like previous
years. The mobile courts will be continued to prevent unscrupulous businessmen and sellers from selling adulterate foods, fruits, edible oil and drinks to the customers.
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu made these disclosures at a press briefing at the ministry on Tuesday morning.
“The government has successfully stopped abuse of formalin in fruits, but such a malpractice will surely make a comeback if mobile courts are not conducted any more,” the minister told the briefing.
The briefing was organised to inform the media of BSTI initiatives to rein in the prices of essentials and ensure quality of the items during the upcoming Ramzan.
Amu said, “The High Court has declared mobile courts run by executive magistrates as illegal and unconstitutional. The Supreme Court’s Appellate Division, however, has stayed the HC verdict till July 2. We’ll try to reintroduce mobile courts after the Ramzan.”
About BSTI-run mobile courts during Ramzan, the minister said, “Like previous years, BSTI’s prosecution officials will also attend the mobile courts run by district administrations, RAB, DMP and APBN. As a result, transparency in court procedures will be ensured. Already, these mobile courts are in operation.”
The abuse of formalin in fruits is now almost zero due to the continuous drive by mobile courts, according to him.
The minister said all law enforcing agencies and common people should resist the unscrupulous traders.
Industries Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said, “the BSTI in association with Dhaka district administration will conduct additional mobile courts in the capital everyday during Ramzan to refrain the dishonest traders from making spurious food items and drinks,”
The mobile courts will test other items particularly puffed rice, dates, banana, mango, soft drink powder, carbonated beverage, fruit syrup, fruit juice, drinks, edible oil, mustard oil, ghee, pasteurized milk, noodles, instant noodles, lachchha vermicelli, vermicelli, water and Dextrose Monohydrate, he said.
The BSTI conducts anti-adulteration drives during Ramadan to ensure supply of food and drinks free from adulteration, he added.
