Selim Reza with Tanvir Ahammed, Sirajganj :
Extensive election campaign has been started for forthcoming 11th national parliamentary election in the constituency of Sirajganj-4, consists of 14 unions and one municipality of Ullahpara upazila.
Although the prospective nominee of Awami League are dynamic in their election campaign, BNP’s candidate are continuing their campaign only through poster and banner without any mass communication.
Statistics show that in the last 10 national parliamentary election, AL won 4 times, BNP 2, Jamaat 2, JP 1 and independent body for 1 times from this constituency. After 90’s turnover, Akber Ali, candidate of BNP won the vote for the first time in 1991’s election. Independent candidate Adv. Shamsul Alam won the election through the controversial vote of `96. AL’s Abdul Latif Mirza won the election in June 96,BNP’s candidate Akber Ali elected again in 2001 election, AL’s Shafikul Islam in 2008 and in the last election of 2014, Tanvir Imam, who is the son of PM’s Political Advisor H.T Imam. AL, BNP and Jamaat have distinct resilient position here but BNP and Jamaat’s political locus is very unstable here due to AL’s supremacy for twice. Even after, AL in power, their leaders and activists were outraged by BNP-Jamaat activists before 2014 election. When Tanvir Imam becomes MP, the condition changes in this constituency totally in 2014 and he has strengthened the political position of Al here. He is one of the persuasive candidate of upcoming election. He says, if the PM gives the ticket, the victory of AL is sure.
Though, Shafiqul Islam, Joint Convener of Upazila AL elected as MP in 2008, he was denied nomination in 2014. Then he became a bit anxious. When the nomination was denied. He made a hunger strike on local Shaheed Miner with his followers but the party leaders and activists did not take this issue positively.
Another candidate of AL hoping for election ticket, Selina Mirza, daughter of former MP Abdul Latif Mirza. She said , my position in election field is very robust especially among women followers. My late father has a lot of acceptance and popularity here. If the PM nominates me, I will be able to easily cross the election margin with the cooperation of all party leaders and workers. Former upazila chairman Zahidul Haque will also seek for the nomination of the party for this seat. BNP and Jammat had strong position here but being accused of the violence and sabotage of last few years, many leaders and activists are now out of the area and many of them are in prison. BNP, has now two committee in Ullapara; one is full, another is convener. Former MP Akbar Ali is the president of full committee. He elected as MP in 1991 and 2001 from here. He told to The New Nation, there is huge development in Ullapara during my time and it is my contribution that Ullahpara has earned the fame as a city of education. If party nominates me, I will win the next election indeed.
Another candidate hoping for nomination Kazi Kamal who demanded nomination for twice but did not get. Both of the candidates have communication gap in their electoral area. The election promotion is being done by their followers. Kamal says, if the party nominates me, victory is sure and I want to work for my party and locality. During saying, he demanded unconditional release of Chairperson Khaleda Zia. Adv Alam, independent candidate won the election in 1996 may also seek BNP’s nomination. Besides, Advocate Simki Imam, Abdul Wahab and Shorafuddin are also in the list who may want nomination.
Rafiqul Islam, former acting secretary general of central Jammat is also hoping for nomination. Although AL won the election 2008, Khan got 96000 more vote than BNP’s candidate and placed second position. But Rafiqul may have to choose as an liberate candidate for loosing EC’s registration. But due to the multiple sabotage cases, he is still out of area. However, it is heard that he can be selected as a candidate from 20- party alliance.
Azad Hossain, Member Secretary of convener committee of Upazila BNP says, the organizational status of BNP is very strong still now, if the fair and neutral election are held, BNP’s victory is sure. On the other hand Hilton Parmanik and Hashen Raju may also seek the nomination from JP for this seat.
