300- meter long embankment collapsedin Sharankhola

A portion, about 300 meters in length, of the under construction ‘durable’ flood protection embankment of the Water Development Board with the financial support of the World bank at Bogi new gate point within Southkhali Union under Sharankhola Upazila in Bagerhat district was suddenly collapsed in the mighty river Baleswar at about 5 pm on Monday causing panic among the people of the localities.
If the alternative measure is not taken immediately at least 5 villages- Bogi, Chalitabunia, Dakhkhin Sothkhali, Bakultala and Khuriakhali of the union will be submerged with the onrush of the sea water at the time of high tide on the occasions of full moon and new moon, it is apprehended by the locals. And consequently, huge number of fish farms, standing Aman paddy of the paddy fields and house hold materials of the area will be washed away by onrush of the water.
Md. Readul Panchayet, UP Member of Bogi Ward told, I never saw such a big slide of the embankment in this area previously. He added, I did not see such a big slide of embankment even at the time of devastating cyclone Sydr in the year of 2007.
Shaikh Mozahed, Assistant Engineer of a Chinese company named HCW said , all on a sudden the embankment was collapsed in the river Baleswar. Shyamal Kumar Dutta, Engineer of the consulting engineering farm of the under construction embankment told, steps were already taken to construct ring embankment to protect the area from the onrush of the sea water.
Being informed of the matter Mohammad Atul Mondol visited the place of occurrence on the same day at 8 pm.
