The ruling Awami League has chalked out a three-day programmes on the occasion of the 47th Victory Day, paying homage to the martyrs for their supreme sacrifice to free the country from the Pakistani rulers.
The country was liberated on the 16th of December, 1971 after about nine months of war of independence.
The first day programme of the party will begin with hoisting of national and party flags at Bangabandhu Bhaban and AL Central Office and all offices of the party across the country.
Later, the leaders will pay tributes to the martyrs by placing wreaths at Savar National Memorial at 6.34 am. They will also place wreaths at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi 32 at 8 am and at the grave of Bangabandhu at Tungipara in Gopalganj at 10 am.
The party will pay tributes at Shikha Chirantan (flame eternal) in Suhrawardy Udyan where the commander of Pakistan occupation army, General AAK Niazi, and his 93,000 soldiers surrendered to the allied forces of freedom fighters and Indian army, at 3 pm today.
Later, the AL will hold a Bijoy (victory) rally towards Dhanmondi.
To mark the day, the party will hold a discussion at 3 pm at Bangabandhu International Conference Center on December 17.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to chair the discussion while central leaders will deliver speeches.
On December 18, a cultural function will be arranged by the party at Rabindra Sarobar in the city. Noted singers of the country will perform at the function.
AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader urged all party leaders, activists and AL associate bodies to celebrate the Victory Day with due respect.
