A suspected criminal was killed during a ‘gunfight’ with the Detective Branch (DB) personnel in the city’s Hatirjheel early Friday.
The victim, identified as Gias Uddin alias Apan, 30, was allegedly involved with the recent kidnapping of a college girl at Uttara in the capital, police said.
Masudur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of DB (Public Relations), said that the law enforcers went to Hatirjheel area after receiving information that ‘a group of snatchers were planning to commit a crime there.’
Sensing presence of law enforcers, the criminals opened fire at them. The DB men also fired in retaliation at around 3:30am, the police official said.
He said that, Apan was caught with bullet injuries and rushed to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) when the on-duty doctors declared him dead.
The law enforcers recovered a pistol loaded with four rounds of bullet and seized a car from the spot. However, they could not arrest the other criminals as they fled the scene, the DB man said.
Masudur said that, Apan and his accomplices had been carrying out various types of criminal activities, including abduction, toll collection and mugging in the city’s Rampura, Gulshan, Uttara and Khilgaon areas.
Apan was one of the suspected abductors of a college student, who was picked up by a gang of criminals from Uttara area on July 4.
Police rescued the girl one hour after the incident and arrested four persons for their alleged involvement with the abduction of the girl and killing of a security guard.
