National Disaster Preparedness Day observed: All-time preparedness for reducing disaster risk stressed

All-time early preparedness along with adequate social awareness, knowledge and efficient emergency response management systems could reduce losses of human lives and properties during the natural disasters.
The opinion came at a discussion organised by district administration in association with District Disaster Management Committee and different NGOs at Zila School ground here on Friday to mark the National Disaster Preparedness Day-2017.
The day was observed with the theme of ‘disaster preparedness round the clock brings sustainable development’ putting importance on early preparedness, necessary knowledge and timely dissemination of information to bring down losses during disaster.
Rangpur Fire Service and Civil Defense Station also organised a demonstration of artificial earthquake drill on Zila School ground in presence of huge crowds, including officials, students, teachers, public representatives and elite of the city.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) AKM Maruf Hassan presided over the discussion.
Deputy Director of Rangpur Fire Service and Civil Defense Station Asaduzzaman Sheikh, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Faridul Haque, General Secretary of Rangpur unit of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Shah Md Nabiullah Panna, spoke, among others.
Asaduzzaman Sheikh underlined the importance of early preparedness on natural disasters and necessary training to ensure comprehensive disaster managements during and after natural calamities.
“The losses of human lives and properties could be reduced substantially through providing training on basic first aids and disaster preparedness to the common people, volunteers, students and youths to enable them assisting the victims timely on the spots,” he said.
Nabiullah Panna expressed concern over frequent tornado, tidal surge, drought, floods and erosions being caused following adverse impacts of climate change affecting every sector.
He called for innovating newer scientific technologies, ways and educating the common people on early preparedness and post-disaster management to reduce risks and losses of human lives and properties during natural disasters.
Sylhet Correspondent adds: National Disaster Preparedness Day-2017 was observed in the Sylhet district Friday with a call to expedite disaster preparedness programmes for reducing the loss of lives and properties in natural calamities.
The district administration chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day with the theme- ‘Disaster preparedness round the clock brings sustainable development.’
The district administration held a discussion meeting in the auditorium of DC Office. DC of Sylhet Rahat Anwar addressed the meeting as the chief guest while DD LG Devojit Sinha, ADC Soyed Aminur Rahman, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer M. Muflazur Rahman, Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense Tonoy Bishwash, Columnist Aftab Chowdhury, Assistant Director of IDEA Nazim Ahmed, Assistant Director of Red Cross Alauddin were the special guests.
Flood, river erosion, cold wave and drought are the main natural calamities of the district and every year such calamities hit the region creating untold sufferings of the people, the speakers said.
Early preparedness undertaken by the people of disaster prone areas could undoubtedly reduce the loss of lives and properties during any disaster, they added.
He emphasized disseminating education, training and knowledge among the rural people, especially living in the disaster-prone areas through GO-NGO coordinated efforts to reduce disaster-losses.
He also underscored the need for creating much awareness among the people of the district about disaster and its bad effect and enhancing the people’s resilience capacity to face any catastrophe successfully.
A large number of people including district and upazila level officials, heads of academic institutions, representatives of different NGOs and journalists of the print and electronic media took part in the meeting.
