Md. Abdur Rahim :
People need to have relax, fun or recreation other than work to dispel boredom and monotony. Recreational activities are the foods of our minds. Life becomes dull for lack of recreations. So different people have different pastimes to spend their leisure. The males of our country enjoy different kinds of games and watch some entertaining programmes on television to shake off their boredom. But most of the females of our country spend their leisure by watching TV programmes especially different drama serials broadcast by different TV Channels. Most of the women have much fascination for the Indian TV serials. The addiction to TV serials is increasing day by day. With the advantage of satellite dish connection in the rural areas, the village women are extremely being addicted to these serials. The women both in towns and villages somehow manage time to watch these TV serials shown by different Indian TV Channels like Star Plus, Star Jalsha, Z Bangla etc. Of course, every man or woman is at liberty to watch TV programmes at his/her choice. But why do they prefer Indian TV serials? Are the Indian serials superior to the native ones?
In fact, Bangladeshi TV serials or dramas are life-oriented. Different events of our life which take place in our life are depicted in these dramas keeping similarity with the reality. But what do we watch in the Indian TV Serials? Most of the drama serials of these channels are unrealistic. We can hardly find the real-life occurrences there. The main characteristics of these serials are family conflict and conspiracies which continue throughout every serial. Some women of a family remain busy in making conspiracy.
Their main job is to make the life of a particular women or girl painful and poisonous. In this case, the central female character becomes the target. This central female character possesses some outstanding qualities through which she can attract and impress others except some women of the family she belongs to. This charismatic woman or girl may be fatherless or motherless or may be the relative staying with them. She may be the new bride of the family. Most of the women of the family become up and doing to find fault with her or to make her unpopular. Besides, one or two relatives stay in the family permanently like the parasites and they add fuel to the flames or they themselves create the conflict. Their main job is to endanger the life of the central woman character of the family. It is seen in almost every serial.
All other women including the parasites make her life excruciating. Some conspiratorial activities of these women can be mentioned here. When the main woman character is asked to make ‘sharbat’ (sweet drink), the conspirators will tactfully mix poison in it to make her responsible. If she tries to cook food, they will mix excessive salt or chillies in the curry. Sometimes, she is made responsible for stealing money or ornaments from the house. They tactfully remove the money or ornaments and make her accused of the theft.
These women have no work at home. They move around the house all the time wearing gorgeous outfit and make up. Sometimes they take part in social and religious activities and most of the time they are involved in conspiracy. If the drama is the reflection of the society, which society do these serials reflect? Does such conspiracy prevail in most of the families in Indian society? Even if it prevails there, it does not matter because our society is completely different from theirs. What are the women of our country learning from these dramas?
Actually, they purposefully show their latest dresses through the characters of these serials. Thus, their particular dresses are marketed to other countries. The women and girls of our country buy these dresses that they see in these dramas. Here lies their success.
Another remarkable aspect of these serials is the illicit love affair. One man falls in love with another woman in spite of having his own wife. This is widely seen in most of the serials.
As women follow the serials, they also cherish a desire to make such illegal relationship. Consequently, many women are engaged in extra marital relationship hampering the peaceful atmosphere of the society.
There are some striking features of these serials like gorgeous make up, attractive dresses, good looking actors and actresses which fascinate the Bangladeshi female viewers. Besides, whatever the story is, their acting skill is excellent. Moreover, they broadcast the episodes of the serials one after another without any intermission. That is, one episode of one serial ends and the other episode of another serial starts immediately. Of course, they show advertisements when the episode continues with short breaks.
But most of the Bangladeshi TV Channels broadcast their dramas or drama serials with lots of breaks which make the viewers bored. If the news is broadcast in the middle of the episode, it lengthens the break creating more annoyance and displeasure. So Bangladeshi TV Channel authorities should reconsider their policies so that they can attract the native audience.
