UNB, Dhaka :
A court in the United States has dismissed all felony charges against Deputy Consul General at the Consulate General of Bangladesh in New York Md Shahedul Islam.
This was confirmed by his lawyer Daniel N Arshack. The case is now over and Islam is free to travel, Consul General in New York Md Shameem Ahsan told UNB, quoting the lawyer on Wednesday.
His diplomatic passport has been returned by the court, Shameem
said adding that he was present during the court hearing. This follows the case filed by Ruhul Amin, former Domestic Aide of Islam.
The verdict came seven months after he was indicted in a case filed by the diplomat’s former domestic help.
On June 12 in 2017, the Bangladesh diplomat had been indicted on charges he forced a foreign servant to work for his family in Queens without pay and assaulted him on several occasions.
On the same day, Islam, who had limited diplomatic immunity, was ordered to surrender his passport when he appeared before Queens Supreme Court Justice Daniel Lewis. Islam was arraigned on grand larceny, assault, labour trafficking and other charges. A message left with his lawyer wasn’t immediately returned, according to AP.
