Paracetamol case: All accused acquitted

A Dhaka court on Monday acquitted five officials of Rid Pharmaceuticals Ltd over manufacturing toxic paracetamol syrup that claimed lives of at least 28 children in 2009.
Judge Atoar Rahman of Drug Court passed the order in the morning slamming the drug administration for their inefficiency in producing the case before the court.
The acquitted are: Rid Pharma managing director Mizanur Rahman, directors Sheuli Rahman, who is also the wife of
 Mizanur Rahman, Abdul Gani and pharmacists Mahbubul Islam and Enamul Haque.
Among them, Mizanur Rahman and his wife Sheuli Rahman are currently on bail, while the other three went into hiding.
Earlier, on 10 August, 2009, drug superintendent Shafiqul Islam filed the case with the Dhaka Drug Court against them.
The children died of renal failures, caused by the intake of Rid’s paracetamol syrup, from June to August in 2009.
In his complaint, Shafiqul Islam said several children died at Shishu Hospital of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city due to renal failure after the intake of paracetamol manufactured by Rid Pharma.
Four more cases were filed against them in Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Narayanganj and Sylhet.
