1st phase UP polls: AL wins 2, BNP 2 & others get 4 in Sylhet

Ruling Awami League-backed chairman candidates won elections in 2 unions while BNP in 2 Unions and other in 4 unions in the 1st -phase of polls in Sadar upazilas held on Tuesday.
The voting was held from 8:00am to 4:00pm without any break amid violence, capturing of polling stations and election boycott by at least nine chairman candidates, mostly by main opposition BNP-backed candidates.
The ruling Awami League-backed candidates won in Khandigawn, and Moglogawn of Sylhet Sadar.
BNP-backed aspirants won in Tokerbazar and Hatkhola Unions of Sadar Upazila. AL Rebels won in Tultikor, Khadimpara, jalalabad and BNP Rebels won in Khadimnagar Union.
Dozens of people were injured in the election violence in various places of the Upazilas.

10 people were injured in Hatkhula union of Sadar upazila in a clash between supporters of Jamaat-bakced candidate and his AL-backed rival.
polling at 1centres was suspended in Sadar upazilas of the district followed an Election Commission order over the allegations of seizing control of centres, clashes and bombing. The centres kept out of the polling are Akhaliya Primary School in Tukerbazar union of Sadar upazila.
As per the Election Commission factsheet, 40 candidates for chairman posts are in the election race, in addition to 91 women candidates for reserved seats and over 359 contenders for member posts in the first phase of the election.
Election to the lowest tier of the local government body is being held along party line for the first time only for the chairman post.
