UNB, Dhaka :
The Awami League will accord a mass reception to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on her return from the UN General Assembly in New York, USA to celebrate her being recognized as one of this year’s “Champions of the Earth” – the highest accolade of the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP).
The decision was taken at a meeting of the secretaries of the party at AL president’s political office at Dhanmondi in the city. AL presidium member Health Minister Mohammad Nasim presided over the meeting.
UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner handed over the award to the PM at a gala reception at New York’s Hotel Cipriani Le Specialita on Sunday evening. The UNEP earlier nominated Sheikh Hasina as one of the winners of its top environmental accolade, recognising her policy leadership for combating the adverse impacts of climate change.
After the meeting Nasim told journalists that the PM will return to Dhaka on October 3. “A mass reception will be thrown on behalf of the country’s people through a standing ovation on both sides of the street from the airport to Ganabhaban,” he said.
The Health Minister also said the warning in the security alerts issued by the US, UK and Canada to its citizens looking to travel to Bangladesh was merely “routine work”, even though it follows hot on the heels of the Australian cricket board’s decision to delay sending their cricketers for a tour scheduled to start September 28.
Mercifully, Nasim didn’t resort to the ‘it’ s-a-conspiracy-against-Bangladesh’ card. Indeed he declared, “We don’ t see anything like hatching of a conspiracy over this issue.”
