BSS, Dhaka :
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Thursday said the ruling party has so far provided food assistance to over 90 lakh families across the country amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“Awami League has so far provided food assistance and Taka 8.62 crore cash support for 90.25 lakh families amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis,” he told a virtual press conference on the contemporary affairs from his official residence here.
Highlighting the AL’s relief activities, Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, said on behalf of the party, the leaders of AL and its associate organisations, the ruling party lawmakers and public representatives have been distributing relief among and providing cash support for the poor and destitute people across the country.
“Distribution of relief goods and cash continues at the grassroots level. In addition, personal protective equipment (PPE), masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, bleaching powder and spray machines are being distributed.” he added.
The AL general secretary said Bangladesh ranked 37th among the world’s 210 coronavirus affected countries but more hard time may come up soon.
“We have to face this challenge with courage,” he said, urging the AL leaders and activists of all tiers to get ready mentally to face this disaster.
Quader said AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina always remains beside the country’s people and she is doing everything necessary for them.
He said the way Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is tackling the coronavirus crisis is highly applauded around the world.
Recalling the homecoming day of the AL president, the road transport and bridges minister said the 7 May is remarkable day in the country’s politics since AL President Sheikh Hasina returned home on this day in 2009 overcoming all the impediments after completing her treatment in the USA.
He said the then caretaker government issued warrant in a false case filed against Sheikh Hasina and instructed international airlines not to issue air ticket to her so that the AL president could not return home.
“But, the daughter of Bangabandhu (Sheikh Hasina) returned home overcoming all the intrigues with her endless courage,” Quader added.
