An activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League [BCL] was killed and 20 others were injured in a clash between the supporters of the Awami League backed and the AL rebel chairman candidates in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur district yesterday noon.The victim identified as Al Amin, 21, was supporter of the AL rebel candidate. He reportedly received bullet injuries and was admitted to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex. Doctors later referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital [DMCH] when his condition deteriorated. Other injured persons were given treatment in the local hospitals.But police said that the victim was crushed under the wheels of a vehicle during the clash. A tense situation is prevailing in the area. Additional police have been deployed to avert further trouble.Local sources said that the clash erupted at about 12:30pm when the supporters of ruling party nominated upazila chairman Iqbal Hossain Sajub, also organizing secretary of the party district unit, resisted the activists of party rebel candidate Abdul Jalil from entering the upazila unit office of the party at Sreepur Bazar around 12:30pm.The supporters of the groups earlier brought out separate processions in the area around 11 am. At one stage, both groups locked in a fierce clash that continued till 2 pm. Chase and counter-chase took place between the two groups and over 20 gun shots were heard during the clashes, leaving at least 30 people, including Al Amin injured.Six motorcycles and one microbus were also vandalised. Later, the police fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.Amir Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Sreepur Police Station, said, “We heard that a man was killed in a road accident during the clash. He was undergoing treatment in the ICU of Uttara Crescent Hospital.”In another clash between the supporters of AL backed candidate and the rebel contender at Dowlat Khan in Bhola district, at least 15 persons were injured on Friday evening, local sources said.Of the injured, nine were sent to Dowlat Khan Hospital. They were identified as Billal, Jamal, Dulal, Idris, Alamgir Bagon, Ismail, Sumon, Siddique and Rubel. Supporters of Mamunur Rashid Babul Chowdhury, General Secretary of upzila AL and upazila Jubo League president Manjurul Alam fought at Subedar Crossing, Charpata area, said OC of local police station Khairul Kabir.
