AL leader stabbed dead in Dhaka

A ward level Awami League leader was stabbed to death at Jatrabari in Dhaka on Tuesday night.

The deceased, Abu Bakar Siddique Habu, 40, is a unit president of ward no 50 of Dhaka South City Awami League.

Abu Bakar was stabbed at Shaheed Faruk Road of Jatrabari at about 8:00pm, said Jatrabari police inspector (investigation) Mohitul Alam.

Abu Bakar, a trader by profession, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead at about 9:00pm, the police said.

Abu Bakar’s friends and relatives primarily said that he was stabbed dead over a dispute centring extortion in the area.

They said that Abu Bakar had been protesting against extortion by a group of locals.

The friends and relatives said that four or five people, including Fahim and Shahin, approached Abu Bakar while he was walking on the road and stabbed at his abdomen and other parts of the body.

Inspector Mohitul said that they were investigating into the incident.
