BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday claimed that the Supreme Court’s verdict scrapping the 16th constitutional amendment has put Awami League in an awkward situation.
“We’re least bothered about what Awami League is saying as the party is now in a very bad condition. The country’s politica
situation is worse than the rundown roads,” he said.
The BNP leader further said, “The verdict on the 16th amendment has reflected people’s hopes and aspirations. It’s also exposed that people are going through serious repressive acts.”
Fakhrul came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after placing wreaths at BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave together with leaders and activists of Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB), marking its founding anniversary.
He said their party has got enthusiastic following the Supreme Court’s verdict as it has also reflected BNP’s views about the government and politics. “As a political party, we’ve welcomed the verdict. We think they (govt) will arrange a neutral election under a supportive government as per the verdict to reflect people’s mandate if they have least values and morality,” the BNP leader said.
About Finance Minister AMA Muhith’s comments on the 16th amendment, he said his party colleagues dismissed those as not right. “And we don’t attach much importance to the finance minister’s comments.”
Asked whether the 20-party alliance will see any expansion, Fakhrul described it as a combine of ‘democracy-loving parties to restore democracy’ and said any individual or party can join it if they agree with them.
About the High Court verdict upholding the death penalty of two convicts and commuting the death sentence of four convicts to life term imprisonment in the Biswajit murder case, he said, “The Chhatra League cadres killed Biswjit before our eyes. We always say Awami League resorts to killing whenever it comes to power. The killing of Biswajit is part of it.”
BNP chairperson’s adviser Prof Sirajul Islam, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Prof Abdul Mannan Mia and Prof Mostaque Rahim Swapon were present.
