Upazila polls: AL finalises candidates in Sylhet

Awami League Sylhet district unit has finalised candidates for the chairman, vice-chairman and female vice-chairman posts in five upazilas of the district in the upcoming upazila election- 2014.
The candidates were finalised at a meeting of Sylhet district Awami League on Saturday night. District AL publicity secretary Joglul Choudhury said in a press note on Sunday at around 11:00am.
In Biswanath upazila, Firuz Khan Panki will contest for the chairman post, Altab Hussen for the vice- chairman post and Sharmeen Rahman Choudhury Tania the female vice-chairman post.
In Golapganj upazila, Advocate Iqbal Ahmad Choudhury will contest for the chairman post, Shorof Uddin vice-chairman post and Nadira Begum Shila female vice-chairman post.
In Goainghat Upazila, Lutfur Rahman Lebu has been picked for the chairman post and Advocate Jamal Uddin and Afia Begum for vice-chairman and female vice-chairman posts respectively.
In Jaintapur upazila, Mohammad Abdullah will run the race for the chairman post, Sirajul Islam for vice-chairman and Joymati Rani for the female vice-chairman post.
In Jakiganj upazila, Lukman Uddin Choudhury has been selected for the chairman post, freedom fighter Mostakim Haidar for vice-chairman and Sajna Sultana Choudhury for the female vice-chairman post.
In Companiganj upazila, district AL has given support to Humayun Kobir Mosobbir and Roma Rani Das to fight for the vice-chairman and female vice-chairman posts respectively while the candidate for chairman post will be selected soon at a meeting of the district AL, added the press note.
District AL president Abdus Johir Chowdhury Sufian presided over the meeting while central organising secretary Advocate Misbah Uddin Seraj attended it as the chief guest.
Among others, district AL leaders Advocate Lutfur Rahman, Imran Ahmed MP, Mahmud-Us-Samad MP, ANM Shofiqul Haque, Ashfaq Ahmed, Masuk Uddin Ahmed, Shoyeb Ahmed Chowdhury, Shah Farid Ahmed, Nijam Uddin and Sujat Ali Rafiq were present at the meeting.
