Rival groups at every seat: AL, BNP aspirants worried

The candidates of both Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are passing their anxious moments as to whether they will get their party tickets to contest in the upcoming Parliamentary election to be held on December 30.
Sheikh Sohel Rana Tipu, who is lobbying for the AL ticket from Rajbari-2, told The New Nation on Thursday, “I am trying to get the party’s green signal. Actually, I am passing busy time for it.”
 “I love my people and I am connected to many development activities in my area. I could work more for the people of Rajbari-2 Constituency if I get nomination. But I am worried because there are 10 other candidates challenging me,” he said.
Md Monir Hossain, who submitted the nomination paper from Patuakhali-2, told this correspondent that he had been working for people of his constituency for long. The people also love me very much. So, I deserve the BNP ticket.”
 “We are waiting for the final announcement,” he said.
The leaders of the both the Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have been divided over selecting the candidates to contest in the coming national election. If the decision is not quashed it will have adverse impact.
The party high commands are also worried and working to reseolve the crisis.
About 4500 aspirants bought nomination papers from BNP, while 4023 from AL. on average 15 candidates submitted their nomination papers for BNP tickets and 13 for AL tickets in single constituency.
Meanwhile, the local leaders and activists are also pro-active in their influenced areas in favour of their favourite candidates.
Some of them especially the youths are advertising their candidates’ activities on facebook and other social media. A huge number of facebook activists have been hurling abusive words at the rival candidates.
Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said, the final list of party candidates for the 11th general election will be announced by November 25.
 “We have completed the nomination process of our candidates. It is expected that the final list will be published by Sunday next after consultation with coalition partners on seat-sharing,” he said.
Realising the gravity of the matter the AL high command warned the candidates, who will not follow the party’s direction, of organistional punishment.
 “The ruling Awami League will not tolerate any ‘unrest’ before the upcoming general election and will take action against any of the party’s activists or leaders if they engage to instigate it,” Obaidul Quader said in a public meeting recently.
On the other hand, the BNP’s nomination board sent strong message to the party rank and file to remain united and ensure party’s victory in the election by working for candidates whoever get its tickets.
BNP will announce the final list of the candidates for each constituency by 27 November.
