Agitated people on Thursday noon at Mahilara under Gournadi upazila on Barisal-Dhaka highway held agitation procession and assaulted Roads and Highways officials protesting substandard repairing works.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer with police rushed to the spot rescued the R and H officials.
Witnesses said R and H officials and staffs led by Nasiruddin Ahmed, sub- divisional engineer and Shishir Kumar Baral, sub assistant engineer, started repairing Barisal-Dhaka highway at Mahilara point on Thursday noon.
However local people led by Mahilara union parishad chairman Soikat Guha Piklu became agitated after they found that the R and H officials using substandard brick-chips with sands instead of stone-chips and bitumen to repair the holes and pitches of the highway.
They cording and chasing the R and H men physically assaulted Nasiruddin Ahmed and confining them inside the Mahilara School stopped the work.
Masud Hasan Patwary , UNO Gournadi , hearing the news rushed to the spot with police. They controlling the situation rescued the R and H officials and resumed the repairing work, said Abul Kalam, Gournadi police station officer in charge.
Local UP chairman Picklu said people protested substandard and temporary work on the highway in rainy season as that may be washed away at any time endangering the life of transport passengers.
Nasiruddin Amed, SDE of R and H said stone chips and bitumen were not used due to rain as per decision of higher authourity.
Khaled Shahed, executive engineer R and H Barisal office, acknowledging the facts said the incident reported to higher authority and action would be taken as per their decision.
R and H high official also explained that bitumen and stone chips were not used due to rain. R and H department asked to repair the road before Eid on emergency basis with sand and brick chips for safety of the home bound Eid passengers. Permanent and sustainable repairing works of the highway would be done on dry season.
