A recent study has found that one in every three houses in Dhaka South has Aedes mosquito larvae.
“We are worried at the high presence of Aedes mosquito in the Dhanmondi, Kalabagan and Segunbagicha residential areas.
It is because these species of mosquitoes breed dengue and chikungunya fever,” said DSCC Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon on Saturday, while launching the second phase of anti-mosquito drive at Banglamotor.
DSCC health department conducted the survey in between June 25 and July 15 in all the 57 wards under five zones.
The Mayor said, Aedes larvae’s presence in the Old part of Dhaka city is less compared with 45 per cent houses in Dhanmondi, 41 per cent houses in Kalabagan and 46 per cent houses in Segunbagicha.
DSCC officials at the first phase reached around 20,000 houses under their jurisdiction to smash dengue and chikungunya. It spread as epidemic in the capital last year.
Public awareness is a must to destroy mosquitoes, said mayor asking cooperation from all.
“The residents should be aware that anti-mosquito and city corporation drives are not enough to control mosquito. They should be alert to keep their surroundings clean to prevent mosquito breeding,” he said.
