Adulterated drugs are being sold at many drugstores in the Sylhet district due to lax monitoring by the authorities concerned, sources said.
Sale of such drugs continues as there has been little or no effective control over the medicine market from production to marketing levels across the country, they said.
Health experts said spurious medicine poses a serious threat to public health as people develop new diseases instead of being cured after taking such drugs.
Many drugstores in Famous Market,Railgate, Kadamtoly under Dakshin Surma,Osmani Medical gate and Rikabibazar are awash with such medicines, which are being sold to unsuspecting customers without any check, sources said.
Noted pharmacologist and professor of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical Collage Dr. Aminur Rahman Told that some medicine outlets across the country preserve counterfeit drugs and sell them to poor and illiterate people, ignoring public health.
This happens at many places of the country where drug administration has little or no monitoring, he added.
Many drug outlets do not maintain business ethics though they operate their business in the life saving sector. Patients may develop many side effects instead of being cured after taking these counterfeit drugs, he explained. He called upon the government to strengthen their monitoring over the medicine shops in rural and suburban areas where owners of many drugstores sell counterfeit drugs.
