The students, who were admitted after 2006 at Darul Ihsan University (DIU), are in uncertain future, as the government will not recognise their certificates.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) sources said, the Commission is not responsible for the misfortunes of students of the DIU, as the UGC warned them and their guardians not to admit in such university.
While talking to The New Nation on Sunday, Chairman of UGC Professor Abdul Mannan said, “The academic activities of the DIU were good
till 2006. But after that the varsity plunged into irregularities of various categories about which the UGC warned it. Finally the Education Ministry was requested to ban the DIU.”
“We will not take any responsibility of the students of DIU. It is the matter of the university. The certificates provided after 2006 session by DIU could not be accepted,” Professor Mannan said.
He said on September 8, 2014, the UGC published illegal private university list that had DIU. It recommended that perspective students and their guardians check the institutions carefully before getting enrolled.
“The UGC asked the guardians and the students, “If anyone get admitted in the published illegal private university, UGC will not take any responsibility for any problem. But many students ignored warning of the Commission,” the UGC Chairman said.
When asked about the compensation of the students, he said, it is not UGC’s job. The students will apply to the university authorities for their compensation.
Earlier, the Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said, the running students of Darul Ihsan University, which was ordered closure by the government, could claim Tk 5 lakh each from the university as compensation.
“As their education has been affected due to the closure of the university, the institution authorities will have to take the responsibility. The students whose academic life has been affected due to the decision can demand Tk five lakh from the authorities,” he said. The Education Ministry finally closed the Darul Ihsan University on July 26.
The DIU was established in 1989. The government of Bangladesh accredited it as a private university in 1993.
Now there are 95 private universities in the country and all the universities are engaged in academic activities except five.
