Administration is openly obstructing free election: Election Commission sitting duck

WHEN this write-up reaches to you, polls-time may start in Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) where all-out preparedness has been accomplished to hold election amid arrest spree of pro-BNP men by police without showing pending cases or no case at all.
The High Court on Monday issued a rule directing against the police action ahead of today’s election. Meanwhile, a delegation of ruling Awami League led by PM’s political advisor HT Imam said EC was satisfied with the overall situation in Gazipur, a statement that should have come from the EC secretariat came from the Awami League. The subservience of the Election Commission is really shameful. Its advice not to arrest as ordered by the High Court Division came too late.
BNP nominee at a press conference in Tongi on Sunday alleged that his party leaders and activists were arrested en masse. He also alleged that law enforcers arrested BNP activists in Gazipur, but claimed that the arrests took place in Narayanganj, Tangail, Mymensingh and other neighbouring districts. Senior AL leaders, mayor of recently held Khulna City Corporation, and a mayoral aspirant of Dhaka campaigned defying the EC’s restriction on outsiders in the city corporation area after Saturday night. The EC on June 22 issued a circular that banned outsiders in the city until the election was over.
When public servants of a free country do not have the integrity to maintain their position impartial they deserve to be punished for being anti-people and anti-Constitution. Each one of the public servants has to treat like public servants; otherwise no free country can remain free.
A weak and illusive Election Commission cannot be trusted for free election with the government in power.
