‘Adivasis’ demand recovery of land, arrest of grabbers

‘Adivasi’ people of Phulbari upazila of Dinajpur formed a human chain on Thursday (26th May) to realise 5 -point demands including recovery of a decimal of grabbed land and immediate arrest of the land grabbers.
The hour -long human chain was formed at Nimtola area in Phulbari town on Thursday from 11.00am to 12.00pm noon. Local leaders of Jatiya Adivasi Parishad (JAP) organised the human chain programme.
The 5-point demands were recovery a decimal of land of Prodhan Mardi and Montu Murmu at Pukhurimor in Phulbari upazila of Dinajpur, arrest of land grabber Sohrab Ali, identify the criminals issued death threat to Adivasi people, harassment of police in the name of arbitration at Phulbari police station, government’s step to protect their land from grabbers by forming separate land commission for the Adivasi people.
At the human chain programme the speakers alleged that the land grabbers cannot control their geed on just a decimal of land of Adivasi people. ‘Just imagine what are happening in around us if the land area is bigger’, said Hopna Kisku president of JAP of Phulbari unit.
It also alleged that the Adivasi people of the area constantly have been receiving death threat from the land grabbers whoever came forward to recover the land.
Criticising police, the speakers at the human chain said role of police is very sad. They always taking stance beside the grabbers and harassed the Adivasis in the name of arbitration at the police station complex.
The speakers also demanded government to form separate land commission.
The speakers were Bikash Mardi General Secretary of Phulbari upazila JAP, Julius Kisku, Bimal Murmu president of Parbatipur upazila JAP, secretary Sagien Hasda, organisational secretary Shivlal Tudu, Publicity Secretary Monuel Soren and Mitni Mardi Joint convener of JAP Dinajpur unit.
Later they handed over a memorandum to UNO of Phulbari at his office.
Ahtesham Reza UNO of Phulbari assured them to look in to the their demands.
Contacted Sohrab Ali said he purchased the piece of land from the Montu Murmu.
This correspondent could not reach Mokshed Ali Officer in Charge of Phulbari police station as he was not receiving the phone call.
But the villagers of the area said there will be bloody chaos ahead just for a decimal of land if local administration not handle the matter properly.
