Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Mashiur Rahman Moshu was murdered for trying to stop the trade of yaba drugs in Dhaka’s Adabar, his father and another leader of the organisation say.
Moshu’s father Julhas Mia and Adabar Chhatra League General Secretary Reaz Mahmud spoke to bdnews24.com on Monday.
They blamed alleged yaba traders Ledu Hasan and his associates for the killing.
Moshu died on Sunday night after unidentified miscreants attacked him with iron rods and sticks at Shekhertek.
Julhas started a case against Ledu, Molla Swapan, ‘Selim’, ‘Sagar’, and four other people on Monday, Adabar Police Station Sub-Inspector Habibur Rahman said.
Swapan had earlier sued Moshu in a case over clashes. Moshu was out on bail in that case, Julhas said.
Police Inspector Aminul Islam said they were trying to arrest the accused people.
Julhas said Ledu threatened Moshu with death on Saturday, asking him not to stop Selim from selling yaba.
“An acquaintance of Ledu called Moshu to settle the dispute through discussion and beat him to death there,” he said.
BCL leader Reaz claimed the gang of Ledu, Selim, Sagar, Swapan, and several other people have been running a yaba ring in the area for long.
Ledu is accused in a number of cases, including one on charges of murder, Reaz said and added his associates were accused in drugs cases.
“Police arrested them several times.
“Moshu always tried to prevent their yaba trade, sometimes directly, and sometimes by providing information to the police,” the BCL leader said.
He also backed Julhas’ claim that Ledu threatened to kill Moshu on Saturday.
“Moshu told him time has changed and now it’s not so easy to murder someone,” Reaz said.
He also said Moshu was environment affairs secretary to the BCL unit.
Locals on Sunday said Moshu was the organising secretary. A central committee member of the ruling Awami League’s student front could not confirm Moshu’s post in the organisation.
His father Julhas said Moshu received a diploma degree from a private university four years ago, but remained unemployed.
