Acute gas crisis causing sufferings to city dwellers

Low pressure of gas supply in last several days making the life of dwellers in port city became miserable every day.
The gas supply for domestic user remained suspended from 8 am to 4 pm every day in the port city Chittagong in last two weeks. The people of the port city cannot complete their necessary works including cooking and official jobs.

 According to sources, the gas supply of 30 million sft has been decreased recently due to the fault of gas compressors at Ashuganj. As a result, the Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL) has also decreased the supply of gas in Chittagong in last week and current week.
According to the officials of the KGDCL, the national grid used to supply 21m sft gas to Chittagong. But, the supply is decreased now. The Chittagong is getting only 185 sft gas since last week. So, the generation of power is being hampered as well as the gas supply in Chittagong is also hampering now.
Manager (Customer and Maintenance) of KGDCL Engineer Anupam Dutta said the gas supply is being hampered due to technical fault. The supply of gas to Chittagong has decreased recently due to the fault of gas compressors at Ashuganj. However, it will be solved very soon, according to him.
According to the sources, gas supply used to be suspended from 8 am to 4 pm at the maximum areas in the port city Chittagong. As a result, people of the Chittagong suffered a lot. The housewives could not cook the foods for their family members. The hotels and restaurants also could not cook for several days. As a result, the suffering of the people of Chittagong was unlimited. Besides, the production of the industries was hampered severely in the industrial areas at Kalurghat, Baizid Bostami, Sitakunda and Patenga.
 Particularly, the production of garment sector hampered severely due to the gas and power crisis. As the gas supply was suspended due to the lack of production of gas by the Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL). The KGDCL cannot supply gas for household use as the pressure of gas is very low and the new compressor at Ashugonj is yet to be set.
As a result, the productions of more than 1200 industries including heavy industries like steel and re-rolling mills and 400 garment factories remained stop and severely hampered recently causing loss of several crore takas, concerned sources said.
Mohammed Abdul Hai, owner of Sikdar Hotel at Jamal Khan road in the city said they could not cook foods for the customers due to gas crisis. The hotels and restaurants have stopped selling tea at the first hours of the day as the supply of gas used to be stopped at that time at the city areas.
As a result, the sufferings of the people of Chittagong are increasing day by day and the production of the mills is being hampered severely due to the crisis of the gas now. The locals and leaders of business community expressed deep concern over the suspension of gas supply,
