LAW enforcers arrested 23 people from Nawabganj’s Bandura area before the election day over the distribution of money to influence the election in favour of a candidate. Earlier, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three people for spreading money to influence voters from the city’s Motijheel and Gulshan areas. Influencing voters by spending money or threatening them are crimes as per the existing laws. Usually we see, a vested quarter tries to influence the voters in different areas, whenever the election comes. No doubt, the law enforcers’ effort and their strict vigilance on the eve of the national election are praiseworthy.
As per news media, police claimed that the arrestees were trying to instigate violence in Nawabganj area in favour of a candidate. Later, a mobile court sentenced two of the arrestees to two years imprisonment. Earlier on 25 December, RAB detained three people in the capital’s Motijheel and Gulshan for allegedly distributing money to influence the election and instigate violence. The RAB members seized Tk 8 crore and some cheques of around Tk 10 crore from their possession.
Meanwhile, the elite force on Friday also detained eight people in separate drives for spreading rumour through social media and electronic devices. The people used to make documentaries based on false information and parody songs to upload them on Facebook, YouTube and other social platforms. A total of 35 people have been arrested in connection with spreading election-related rumours.
To foil the election or to make the election controversial, several groups especially linked to fundamentalist quarters were in the field. But the law enforcers with the state-of-the-art intelligence support busted the network.
Definitely, all credit goes to the Election Commission and the law enforcers, including the Armed Forces, who ensured a peaceful environment thus people can cast their vote in favour of their candidates. The action of the law enforcement agencies is the key to the safety and security of the citizens in a crucial moment.
