There was a committee to prepare necessary act for Jagannath University Central Students Union (JnUCSU) led by Prof Dr Akkas Ali of Law Department to collect information of other students union act, analyzing existing act and finally forming a worthy act for JnUCSU. Two months have passed since the committee formed, but there has been no adequate progress. The committee has failed to submit draft act in the scheduled time.
The other members of the committee were Prof Dr Md Atiar Rahman, Dean of Arts Faculty, President of JnU Teachers’ Association Md Nur Mohammad, Prof Abdullah Baki, Director of Student Welfare and it is said that the Assistant Registrar (Law) would serve as the secretary in that committee. More than two months ago, the committee was instructed to make recommendations for amending the act for the university students union within forty-five working days, which ended recently (September 12).
Students of the university and leaders of different student organisations were happy to hear that announcement, but now they have expressed their dissatisfaction over the delay.
The students of the university have been long demanding for JnUCSU elections on the campus. So there need immediate formation of the act. Through social media under the Facebook group titled” We want JnUCSU polls”, students are demanding immediate polls using the hash tag for “Joksu Chai” and expressed their anger to the authorities. But the authority seems indifferent to their demand. Even a section of students went hunger strike unto death for JnUCSU polls. Later, following the hunger strike, university authorities were forced to form a committee for JnUCSU act as according to existing constitution of the university, there is no section for JnUCSU polls.
Raisul Islam Noyon, convener of “Sadharan Shikkharthi Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishod” and one of the students taking part in the hunger strike said, the JnUCSU related demonstrations were stopped due to the Act Forming Committee as VC gave us commitment holding the polls. We respect him and I am urging the Committee to complete JnUCSU act immediately, otherwise we will announce a tougher movement with general students”.
JnU unit Chhatra Union General Secretary, Junayed Ahmed said, we are waiting to see what kind of act the committee form as the forty-five working days ended yesterday. W are requesting them to submit the act immediately, if anything goes against students welfare we will protest it, said Junayed.
JnU unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) President Rafiqul Islam claimed, the Act Forming Committee was just a ‘game of twilight’. It seems that the university administration actually does not want JnUCSU polls. If they did, they wouldn’t delay it in the name of Act Forming Committee, he said. As the students and leaders were staging demonstration for JnUCSU polls, the university authority formed a so-called committee to stop their movement, he added.
Prof Dr Md Akkas Ali, Convener of Jnucsuact Forming Committee told the New Nation that the committee members held several meetings, collected the Guidelines of different student unions, and they are now busy with descending and typing to submit a final draft for JnUCSU. “It is not easy to form a constitution within 45 working days. Besides, one member of the committee stayed some days outside of the country. That’s why we need some more days but we think within one week, we could submit our report to authorities concerned”, he added.
According to the university sources, Jagannath College was converted into public university through the passage of a law in National Parliament in 2005. Since that no polls were held for central student’s union.
The first Jagannath College Central Students Union (JCCSU) polls held on 1954, until 1969, 10 committees elected through elections. Though Jagannath College Central Student’s Union elections are to be held nearly every year, there have only been four since independence. They were in 1972, 1979, 1986 and 1987. Though efforts were made several times, no election has been organised since then.
