Abrar murder: Accused Setu on remand

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka yesterday placed another BUET student on a four-day remand in the Abrar Fahad murder case.
The accused SM Mahmud Setu is a 14th-batch student of BUET Chemical Engineering Department.
Magistrate Mohammad Jasim of the CMM Court passed the order after Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Md Wahiduzzaman who is also the Investigation Officer of the case produced Setu before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.
Earlier, detectives arrested Setu from the city’s Bangla Motor area around 7:00 pm on Sunday. With Setu, 21 accused of the case have so far been arrested in connection with the murder, informed the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Although Setu’s name was not mentioned in the charge-sheet, he was arrested depending on the confessional statements of several accused in the case and other relevant evidence, said Masudur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of DMP on Sunday.
Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of BUET, was beaten to death by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League men at the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall between the night of October 6 and 7.
Abrar’s father filed the murder case against 19 students of the university, mostly BCL leaders, and several other unnamed accused with Chawkbazar Police Station on October 7.
Of the accused at least eight made confessional statements narrating the descriptions of torturing Abrar which caused his death.
