Chouddagram arson: Accused killed in road ‘accident’

A former leader of local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), who was accused in cases filed over the bus arson attack in Chouddagram upazila that killed eight people, has been killed in a reported road accident in Daudkandi upazila.
The deceased was identified as Sohel, 32, a former leader of Chouddagram upazila unit of JCD and son of Babul Miah of Jagmohanpur village in Chouddagram. He was also a member of local union unit of BNP.
Sources at Daudkandi Model Police Station said a patrol team of police found an unidentified youth lying on the road with multiple injuries suffered from a road accident at Hasanpur on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Daudkandi upazila at around 2:30am on Monday.
The law enforcers took him to local Gouripur Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment, police said, adding that his identity was ascertained at the hospital.
Sohel’s whole body got smashed and one of his hands was found broken. Besides, there were marks of injury in his head, said a doctor at the hospital.
Meanwhile, victim’s father Babul Miah said Sohel had been on the run after cases were filed in connection with the petrol bomb attack on a bus at Jagmohanpur village in the upazila.
Uttam Kumar Chakrabarti, officer-in-charge of Chouddagram Police Station, said Sohel was No 53 accused in two cases filed over the incident. He was also wanted in several other cases, he said.
