UNB, Dhaka :
The High Court on Thursday granted interim bail to Mohammad Ali who was arrested along with 61 kg gold and currencies worth Tk 8 crore from the city in 2014.
An HC vacation bench of Justice Md Abu Zafor Siddique and Justice Khizir Ahmed Choudhury passed the order after
hearing of a petition filed by Mohammad Ali. Abdul Baset Majumder stood for the accused while deputy attorney general Mosharraf Hossain Sarder represented the state.
Meanwhile, the state will file an appeal with the Supreme Court on Sunday against the HC order, said Mosharraf. On December 25, 2014, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate, and Detective Branch of police seized at least 528 gold bars weighing 61 kilograms and local and foreign currencies stashed in four sacks from an apartment in the capital’s Purana Paltan and arrested Mohammad Ali, an alleged Hundi trader.
Ali had then claimed that Sirajganj sadar upazila Awami League-backed chairman Riaz Uddin was the owner of gold. He had also made confessional statement before a court disclosing the name of Riaz, former organising secretary of Sirajganj Awami League.
