Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Thursday said the formulation process of accreditation council act is at final stage to supplement the endeavors of the government to ensure quality education.
“We are working on formulating an accreditation council act for both public and private universities aiming to improve standard of education,” he told the 16th convocation of American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) here.
Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh Prof Abdul Mannan, Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh Hanne Fugl Eskjaer and AIUB Vice Chancellor Dr Carmen Z Lamagna addressed the convocation.
Nahid said the government has also taken steps to transform the University Grant Commission (UGC) into Higher Education Commission to enhance quality of higher education intensifying monitoring activities, an official release added. The process of transforming UGC into higher education commission is at final stage, he added.
Nahid said, “Accreditation council act will be a very crucial law for higher education sector…. I hope this law will significantly contribute to improve the quality of higher education.”
Bangladesh has made considerable progress in enhancing enrolment of
education but it is lagging behind in increasing quality of education, he
added.
“Massive efforts are on to provide quality education for our younger
generation,” he added.
Nahid urged the university authorities to take specific plan to generate
new knowledge to make it more useful and effective for solving problems in
the national life.
He warned that private universities must shift to own campuses within next
one year, otherwise legal action will be taken against those universities.
“The government will shut down those private universities, which will fail
to move to their own campuses within the next one year time,” he added.
