The students of Islamic University (IU), Kushtia are in an acute problem with accommodation crisis that often hits their academic activities.
Islamic University, during establishment, was established as a residential university, almost 40 years had already been passed it could not be declared as fully residential institution.
Around 14775 students are studying at 33 departments under seven faculties in the university.
The university authorities increased the number of departments year after year but the number of seats is not increased.
Campus sources said that the university has eight residential halls including five for male and three female students which provide 4000 hundred seats only.
The university authorities provided 382 seats for its students in Jatir Pita Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall while 474 in Saddam Hossain Hall, 396 in Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall, 398 in Lalon Shah Hall, 260 in Sheikh Russel Hall, 540 in Desh Ratna Sheikh Hasina Hall, 398 in Khaleda Zia Hall and 440 seats in Bangamata Begum Fazailatunnesa Mujib Hall accommodation.
A total of 900 students are staying in Sheikh Hasina Hall against 540 seats while 600 students are staying in Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall against its 400 seats.
At least 12 to 14 residential students are staying in a four seated room while 60 to 70 students are living in a female mass room, known as Gono room. The students cannot complete their study in these rooms due to the lack of inadequate room for the students.
To remove the problem from the university, the university authorities should take necessary steps to provide seats to the students establishing new halls in to the university.
The students of the mass room face the acute problems during the summer season as they are to live in a room that is unbearable torment for them.
Sadia, a fresher’s at Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall, ‘It is difficult to stay at the mass room specially in during summer season. As a result of being twelve to fourteen students in a room we can’t concentrate on our study.
Talking to New Nation, Farjana Akter Meem, a second year student of the Khaleda Zia Hall said, ‘Many of the female students are living in the mass room that effect on their academic activities.
Confessing the problem, IU hall provost council president Prof Dr Akram Hossain Mozumdar told New Nation that they the female students stayed in the Gono room for their safety. ‘We urged to the university authorities to solve the problem as early as possible’, he added.
IU vice-chancellor Prof Dr Rashid Askari said that the numbers of female halls in our university is less than the students, adding that, if we implement our mega project, we would be able to provide 85 percent seats for the students.
Action would be taken against the students who were staying in the halls after completion of their studies,’ he said.
