The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday launched an investigation into the accumulation of wealth by Laxmipur Municipal Mayor Abu Taher.
The anti-graft body came up with the probe after receiving specific allegations against him.
On Sunday, the ACC appointed its Director Mir Zainul Abedin Shibli as Supervising Officer, while Deputy Director Jahangir Alam as an Inquiry Officer, official sources said.
The Commission also received complaint about illegal income against Taher’s family members.
Taher is an Awami League leader of Laxmipur, but there are four cases only against him. Taher’s eldest son Aftab Uddin Biplob is also accused of killing BNP activist Kamal and Islami Chhatra Shibir activist Mohsin in 2000. He was jailed for life in both the murder cases.
In 2003, Biplob was sentenced to death for killing advocate Nurul Islam, the then organizing secretary of the party. He was abducted in 2000 and hacked to death.
Late President Zillur Rahman granted clemency to Biplop in the advocate Nurul Islam murder case, in which he was sentenced to death in 2011.
