UNB, Dhaka :
In another alleged controversial move, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) is going to relieve former Housing and Public Works secretary Dr Khondaker Showkat Hossain of the allegation of taking government plots abusing power.
“Many senior government officials, including secretaries and judges, have taken government plots violating rules. If a charge-sheet is submitted against Showkat, similar probes will have to be initiated against others who’ve taken plots violating rules,” an ACC senior official told UNB wishing anonymity.
On April 22, 2014, the national anti-graft body filed three cases against Dr Showkat Hossain for reportedly taking government plots abusing power.
Nearly seven months after the launching of the investigation, the ACC investigation officer has prepared a report on the graft allegation of Showkat recommending the Commission not to submit a charge-sheet before court against him.
ACC director and investigation officer Jatan Kumar Roy, who is going to retire on Monday (Nov 10), said he has prepared his investigation report on Showkat’s graft allegation and will submit it before
the Commission by Monday next. Dr Showkat Hossain, now Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment secretary, has allegedly taken three plots against the names of his family members abusing his power when he was the Housing and Public Works secretary.
According to the Dhaka Improvement Trust (Allotment of Lands) Rules, 1969, no person, who has already been allotted a plot for residential purpose, in his or her name or in the name of his/her, wife/husband or in the name of dependent children or any other dependent, by the Trust or the government in any housing estate or by the Board of Revenue of any khas land or any person who has already a house within the jurisdiction of Dhaka and Narayanganj Municipal Committee or suburb of these municipal areas within the jurisdiction of the Trust, shall be allotted a plot.
As per the rules of Rajuk (Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha), husband and wife cannot be owners of its separate plots, but Showkat has taken three plots from government quota against his name and that of his wife, Dr Ayesha Begum, and mother.
