Mahabub Alam :
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has collected necessary papers and documents relating to the sale of four jute and textile mills when Abdul Latif Siddique was the Jute and Textiles Minister.
Those mills were sold violating the rules and regulations at a negligible amount depriving the National Exchequer of revenue.
On condition of anonymity, an official of the Commission said that the papers would help prepare a primary inquiry report.
Team leader and ACC Deputy Director
Mirza Zahidul Alam told The New Nation that they had collected necessary documents from various sources.
“We are scrutinising the papers. We will take evidence from witnesses shortly. After that, we may prepare a report”, he said.
In response to a question, he said that the Commission received an allegation about the sale of four mills during the tenure of Latif Siddique as the Jute and Textiles Minister.
“It is not still sure whether Lafit Siddique is responsible”, he said, adding that the matter would be clear soon.
Allegations have been raised that Mohini Textile Mills in Kushtia, Muslin Cotton Mills in Gazipur, Chisti Textile Mills in Comilla and Valika Woollen Mills in Chittagong were sold during his tenure.
Following the irregularities, the ACC initiated a probe into the complaint a few months ago.
Apart from aforementioned allegation, three other separate graft complaints against the former minister are underscrutiny.
But the investigation officials of the Commission could not achieve any progress in the inquiry work.
In October, 2012, the Commission’s Mymensingh integrated district office began an investigation against Abdul Latif Siddique on the basis of a specific complaint of selling a piece of government land measuring 0.98 acres in Netrokona.
Although Deputy Assistant Director of the anti-graft watchdog Sharif Hossain was assigned to conduct the inquiry work, he could not complete the work. Later Assistant Director Paul Kamal was given the duty in May, 2014.
ACC Bogra integrated district office initiated an inquiry to dig out if Latif sold a jute mill in the district without tender in 2013. But the investigation has not yet been completed.
Dhaka-2 integrated district office launched probe against him on receipt of information that he had sold Goldnail Press House in Narayanganj without tender. ACC Assistant Director Shamsul Alam is inquiring.
Latif Siddique, also former Posts and Telecommunications Minister, was fired from the post due to his defamatory remarks about Islam, Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (SM) and Hajj.
