Mahabub Alam :
The Department of Shipping (DoS) has not still sent important documents and papers of 56 water vessels to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) despite repeated reminders.
The Shipping Department says it has lost the papers of two capsized
vessels and so, it is not possible for it to comply with the ACC request. The ACC has asked for registration, weight, stability, design, fitness and other papers of the vessels.
The Commission has sent letters to the DoS thrice asking for the documents of the water vessels, including MV Miraz-4 and MV Pinak-6, which sank in the Padma River last year, said a deputy director of the ACC.
However after receiving of letter for the third time on January 11, the DoS informed that they were not finding the documents of the Miraz and Pinak and that is to why time is taking, he said.
The officer said, the investigation is being hampered for want of those papers.
In October last year, the ACC initiated a probe into an allegation that the DoS Surveyor Mirza Saifur Rahman committed irregularities at the time of surveying many water transports in exchange of a good amount of money.
Saifur Rahman so far surveyed 3,045 water transports in the last few years.
Allegation has been raised that he committed irregularities in most of those. The Commission received specific complaints about 56.
They were issued fitness certificates upon his survey reports though they were not fit to cruise.
