The Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday (ACC) interrogated BNP Executive Committee member Tabith Awal, as part of investigation into his bank accounts and transactions.
Tabith Awal is also Vice-President of the Bangladesh Football Federation. He was questioned at ACC’s Segunbagicha headquarters between 10am and 2pm on transactions.
The Commission got suspicious transactions of Tk 125 crore in his bank accounts. ACC Public Relations Officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya said that ACC’s Deputy Director Akhter Hamid Bhuiyan interrogated him. ACC officials said, Tabith was summoned on April 24 to question him over amassing money from undisclosed sources and funneling those abroad.
The commission alleged that about Tk 125 crore was deposited by some of BNP’S top leaders into Tabith’s bank accounts in 30 days.
The leaders include BNP Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Nazrul Islam Khan, Vice-Chairmen Abdul Awal Mintoo and M Morshed Khan, and Joint Secretary General Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel.
Meanwhile, BNP leaders accused the Awami League government of using the ACC to persecute its political rivals instead of preventing corruption. They rejected the charge of suspicious transactions. Tabith Awal contested mayor post in the Dhaka North City Corporation election with BNP ticket.
