The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a law suit against Professor Mollah Amir Hossain, former Chairman of Jashore Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, and nine others for embezzling TK 1.20 crore while purchasing computers, computer parts, and printers.
Jashore ACC Assistant Director Mahfuz Iqbal filed the case against the 10 accused on Wednesday, said Al-Amin, Deputy Director of ACC in Jashore.
The nine other accused in the case are Deputy Assistant Engineer Kamal Hossain, Assistant Secretaries (Common Services) Jahangir Alam and Ashraful Islam, Sports Officer AFM Asafuddula, Security Officer Monir Hossain, Audit Officer Abdus Salam, Accounts Officer Mizanur Rahman, System Analyst Sharif Salma Kohinoor and Jahanara Khatun. All were members of the purchase committee for buying the computers, computer parts, and printers.
According to the case statement, a total of Tk 3,16,28,365 was spent for the purchase of computers, computer parts and printers for the education board during the fiscal years 2016-17, 17-18, and 18-19. This cost seems to be inconsistent with the audit department.
The ACC started investigation after the watchdog came to know about the matter.
Through verification of market price, it was known that the actual price of the products was Tk 1,96,28,342. An additional Tk 1.20 crore was misappropriated in the name of the purchase, added the statement.
As the ACC found the financial irregularities through investigation, assistant director Mahfuz Iqbal filed the case against the 10 members, including board Chairman, of the purchase committee.
ACC Deputy Director Al-Amin further said if anyone, who was not mentioned in the investigation, is found involved in the corruption, they will also be brought under the law.
