ABT plans to target political, religious leaders

The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) of police arrested two active members of the banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam, commonly known as Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) from Narsingdi and Narayanganj on Tuesday. The arrestees are — Hizbullah Mia alias Rasel Ahmed, 22, and Nurul Alam, 23.
The detainees were running a Telegram group called “Ei sotabdi Islamer bijoyer sotabdi”. They were chatting among themselves by opening a secured group to plan, train and prepare for the deterioration of the law-and-order situation and sabotage in the country by spreading religious extremist ideology and creating panic among the general public.
It was also learned from their group chatting that they were planning for “target killing” various political leaders, including members of religious organizations.
ATU’s Superintendent of Police (SP-media and awareness) Mohammad Aslam Khan confirmed it on Wednesday.
He said that a team of ATU first arrested Hizbullah from Narsingdi’s Raipura area around 3:15pm and based on his information, they later arrested Nurul from Modonpur area in Narayanganj around 8pm.
Arrested Hizbullah used to open a covert group in the Telegram app called “Ei sotabdi Islamer bijoyer sotabdi”. He later appointed more members as admins of the group. Another arrested Nurul Alam is one of them, he added.
The operation against the remaining members of the group is also continuing, he further said.
SP Aslam also said that the arrestees were promoting militancy online with the aim of establishing “Ghazwatul Hind”. They had been conducting various activities for a long time for the establishment of Khilafah in Bangladesh through anti-state conspiracies.
Religious extremists wanted to create law-and-order situation in the country by spreading their ideology with creating panic. The groups were opened up to plan, train and prepare for the sabotage. Members of various religious organizations and political leaders were also targeted for killings, he added.
Legal action has been taken against them.
