TIB wants crossfire to end: Absence of good governance now biggest crisis

Staff Reporter :Chairperson of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Sultana Kamal on Saturday said that “good governance is impossible if the government continues cross fire.” “The human rights are violated in every step in absence of good governance,” she said. Sultana Kamal said this while speaking at the launching of a Citizen’s Platform for Sustainable Development Goals, Bangladesh organized by Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) at CIRDAP auditorium. Executive Director of TIB Dr Iftekharuzzaman, Executive Director of Campaign for Popular Education Rasheda K Choudhury, CPD Executive Director Professor Mustfizur Rahman and Convener of the platform Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya spoke at the function, among others.Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) would be difficult for Bangladesh without good governance, Sultana Kamal said.  “Mere economic growth is not the lone criteria of development in modern democracy, Justice and security must prevail simultaneously, she added. It will be hard to achieve the SDGs with the ongoing pattern of economic deprivation and human rights violations, said Executive Director of Manusher Jonno Foundation Shaheen Anam.Becoming a middle-income country, leaving 17 percent of the population under the poverty line, will not be socially and morally correct, she said.Absence of good governance being the biggest crisis in the present Bangladesh, the incidents of human rights violations have been recurrent, said Shaheen Anam.
