About 7 lakh tons food deficit in Ctg Divn

There are deficit of about 7 lakh tons of foodgrains in Chittagong Division against the total requirement of 51 lakh tons food according to ratio of population.
Besides, food procurement lags behind this year than the previous year. The food stock recorded in last year about 1.74 lakh tons but in this current year , the stock estimated about 1.46 lakh tons. The stock position will some how increase after discharge of food rains from two vessels now in port. Divisional food office sources said according to population density, the cultivable land is less and major portions of the Chittagong Division include coastal area and hillzone area in greater hilltracts.
Sources said, the deficit will be filled up either by import or procurement from the areas of northern zone of the country where surplus food productions achieved. Regional Director of Food Department, Chittagong told that the deficit of Chittagong Division will be adjusted bringing foodgrains from Dhaka, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Khulna from surplus productions.
He further said, according last census of 2011, the total polulation of Ctg division is 2.92 cr for which foods required 51.30 lakh tons for these population.
