Two of the three Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials of Rangpur arrested over the abduction of a woman and her son have been suspended.
Rangpur CID’s additional police super (ASP) Ataur Rahman confirmed the matter on Saturday.
The two suspended officials are – Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Md Hasinur Rahman and Constable Ahsanul Haque Faruk.
ASP Ataur Rahman said the decision of suspension of the two cops was taken verbally. Written documents didn’t arrive at Rangpur CID office yet.
However, suspension of the prime accused ASP Sarwar Kabir Shohag is under process now, said authorities concerned.
According to a CID source, since Sarwar is a high-ranking police officer, the authorities concerned need the home ministry’s approval to suspend him, which has yet to be given. Meanwhile, a committee headed by SP Pankaj Kumar of Dinajpur CID has been formed to investigate the incident.
On Wednesday, five people including three CID officials were sent to jail after they were arrested in a case related to abduction of Jahura Begum and her son Jahangir Alam and demanding Tk 15 lakh as ransom for their release.
Victim Jahangir Alam filed the case against 10 persons with Chirir Bandar police station on Wednesday. Later, the case (No. 26) was handed over to the DB of Dinajpur Police.
Local sources said source Shafiul Alam Polash made an allegation against Lutfar Rahman of Gadusapara in village Nandarai under Abdulpur union of Chirir Bandar upazila of embezzling Tk 50 lakh. Receiving the allegation, ASP Sarwar Kabir Sohagh, ASI Hasinur Rahman and Constable Ahsanul Faruk, source Shafiul Alam Polash and microbus driver Habib Mia went to Lutfar Rahman’s house at about 9:30pm on Monday (August 23).
Failing to find Lutfar Rahman, the CID officials picked up mother Jahura Begum and son Jahangir Alam from their village home. Then they demanded ransom of Tk 50 lakh from Jahura’s husband Lutfar Rahman and brother-in-law Ramzan Ali over the phones.
The abductees’ family members then contacted the police and RAB seeking help.
Lutfar and Ramzan went to pay the ransom near Haji Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University on Tuesday afternoon.
The abductors were nearby but fled the scene by their microbus after realizing that Lutfar and Ramzan were accompanied by plainclothesmen.
After a chase, police caught Sarwar, Hasinur, Ahsanul and microbus driver Habibur Rahman at Doshmile in Dinajpur town. Besides, the abductees were rescued.
Polash was arrested later in connection with the abduction.
Showing arrested in the case, they were produced before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Shishir Kumar Basu in Dinajpur on Wednesday afternoon.
In the evening, confessional statement of accused Shafiul Alam Polash was recorded at the court under Section 164. Then the court ordered to send the accused to jail.
Besides, the court recorded the statements of the plaintiff Jahangir Alam, his mother Jahura Begum, and two more witnesses.
